The advantages of SOIL TESTS
Soil testing is an important part in the process of caring for your lawn. It should be done on several spots in the lawn to determine the health of the soil and thus the lawn in general.
When we conduct soil testing we gather samples from about 5-20cm below the lawn. We ensure that we don’t touch the soil in the process as the residue from our hands may influence the end results. Each of the samples are marked and indicated from where we have obtained it regarding the specific lawn.
Typically we will take a sample from each corner and the centre as well as also mix a sample together for an overall view. We may also take samples from very sunny areas and shady areas to determine the soil balance at the particular spots. For the purpose of soil testing, we also remove the rocks, pebbles and any debris from the samples without touching them with our hands.
Soil testing is beneficial for the measurement of nutrients in the lawn, the pH of the soil, and the combination or ratio of phosphorus, potassium, and nitrogen. The pH should be determined as some grass types grow better in acidic soil whilst others require a less acidic environment. It is important to determine the current pH level before adding a mix of fertilizer. The fertilizer that we recommend and apply will thus have the best possible ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium to ensure maximum growth for the particular lawn.
Where needed we apply fertilizer, a top dressing mix and compost to lower the PH level. If the pH must be higher we may add ash, lime or a specific combination of fertilizer to ensure the correct level. The nitrogen we add has the purpose of ensuring leafier grass to prevent pest infestation. The phosphorus is added for root growth and the potassium is well suited for solid root establishment. The right combination must be used as too much of a good thing may even harm your lawn. Contact us today for soil testing assistance and an evaluation of the health of your lawn.
